Malvern Autumn Show once again hosted the NFYFC Floral Art & Cookery Competitions Finals this year, with around 200 members from all over the Country taking part.
Saturday saw two teams from Herefordshire in the running, and aiming to impress professional chefs Ben Axford and Hetty Ziegler-Jones, with their menus to the theme – ‘An Anniversary Celebration’. Competitors were required to prepare, cook, and serve a 4 course meal for 2, using 2 gas rings, in 1 hour!
Herefordshire A Team – made up of Hope Baldwin (Dilwyn YFC), Rebecca Hobby (Golden Valley YFC), and Bethany Hope (Pencombe YFC), captivated the judges with their dinner themed around a 1st Wedding Anniversary – ‘Paper’. They finished joint 2nd overall, out of 32 teams – thanks to their dishes that included a blini canape selection, salmon parcels, pan-fried duck, and a trio of desserts.
Sunday followed with the Floral Art Finals, where the under 16s were required to make a ‘Men’s Designer Buttonhole’, under 21s ‘A Wreath or Door Hanging for a Family Celebration’, and under 26s ‘A Wedding Table Arrangement – to include leaf manipulation’ – all judged under NAFAS rules.
Herefordshire came up against strong competition in all categories, with some spectacular arrangements on display; but Jess Wright (Lugg Valley YFC) was awarded an ‘excellent’ grade for her lime themed arrangement in a martini vase, and was awarded with 2nd place in the Senior category.
